Northampton County Brings More Housing Through HOME Consortium Funds

Written by:   wildfire

August 2025—Northampton County’s Economic Development team was recently awarded $65,000 from the Choanoke Area Housing Consortium’s HOME program to help address critical housing needs. The selected site is part of Economic Development’s Odom Housing Rehabilitation Project, where former staff houses located on the now-closed Odom Prison property will be renovated for quality affordable housing.

Economic Development Director Derrick Bennett and his team understand that the people of Northampton County, ranging from educators to senior citizens to veterans, desperately need housing options that don’t break the bank. “The Odom Housing Rehabilitation Project is our way of making uninhabited homes livable again. Economic growth expands beyond courting businesses and industries. We’re building a network of support for our people, one house at a time.” The project received strong support from the Northampton County Sherrif’s Office, led by Sherrif Jack Smith and the Northampton County Veterans Service Office, led by Richard Pait. Bennet added, “We look forward to an upcoming success story that provides quality and affordable housing to all of our residents, and I am particularly excited to serve our former service members.”

The Choanoke Area Housing Consortium is comprised of five counties: Northampton, Bertie, Hertford, Martin, and Halifax. In 2023, the Consortium became a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) entitlement community, allowing it to receive HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) funds. These funds support activities such as construction, acquisition, and rehabilitation of affordable housing, as well as rental assistance for low-income individuals. Much gratitude goes to the HOME Consortium Board who heard and understood our vision and worked hard to help create a viable project.
